The CSU Student Government Association unveiled a new campus mural today, highlighting the university's core values, including engagement, sustainability, excellence and inclusion.
The mural, titled "The Path to the Future," was designed by CSU senior Andrea Mendoza-Gonzalez. Mendoza-Gonzalez designed the mural in colors and style native to her Latin heritage and painted it, with the help of volunteers, over the span of two months.
During the unveiling ceremony, Mendoza-Gonzalez explained that the mural makes use of floral and fauna important to Georgia and CSU culture. The dogwood flower, a thriving Georgia flower, provides nectar to pollinators as CSU faculty provide academic nourishment for their students. The Tiger Swallowtail, the state butterfly, works to extract nectar from flowers to carry pollen to other plants. This interaction serves as a symbol for students who extract knowledge from faculty teachings and then "fly off" to share their knowledge with others. The cougar, CSU's mascot, represents campus spirit and the university's dedication to sustainability. Lastly, the yellow paint represents pollution, serving as a reminder to take care of the earth. As the cougar is stepping along this path to the future, the path that is left behind becomes cleaner, more flowers begin to bloom, and the pollen starts to disperse.
"I continue to be amazed by the creativity found among our students - especially among the leadership of our Student Government Association," CSU President Dr. Chris Markwood said.
SGA President Curtis Walker said the organization wanted to focus on sustainability, campus collaboration, and creating opportunities for students to put their skills and talents into practice.
"That spirit of inspiration, leadership, and success, is what SGA is about and why we are honored to have the ability to display it on this mural," Walker said.
The mural will be on permanent display and can be found in front of Jordan Hall on the CSU Main Campus.
